Weight Loss

A key to losing weight is patience. Weight gain happens over time and losing weight obviously takes more than overnight, so be patient and don’t expect to notice changes immediately. Also synergy is an important part of loosing weight.  That is combining all the methods available results in a much higher probability of success.

As the methods of weight control are combined, the results amplify. Often during weight loss, people concentrate on one or two methods. They might exercise effectively and have a motivated attitude, but they continue to eat unhealthy, fattening food. Or they eat less and eat better food, but won’t exercise.

Weight loss is most successful when all methods are combined. Together their synergy offers significantly greater results than any single method. Essential oils can be a key to this because they can help with all the methods.


Essential oils are a remarkable source of uplift and mental well-being either through diffusion, massage, or baths. Since weight loss takes months of mental resolve and years of follow-up, having this emotional support is an important asset. Oils that strengthen us mentally and emotionally are Cypress, Oregano, Peppermint and a balancing blend. Oils that help us stay on course during times of stress are Lavender andYlang Ylang and an elevating blend. Diffuse these oils in areas where time is spent. Absorbing the oils through the olfactory system provides great benefits and the proper diffuser will also add anions (negative ions) to the air which is a very good positive energy source.
Stress is a major contributor for most people who sometimes “binge” or habitually eat late or eat fattening foods. Prior to mealtimes or as you feel stress induced hunger emerge diffuse, use a shoulder massage, or use a tissue cup using the oils mentioned above. If you have a problem with late night eating or snacking, try running the diffuser where you spend time prior to sleeping to curb late night binges.


Oils that give us energy are Grapefruit, Wild Orange, Peppermint, Rosemary and a citrus blend. These can be diffused or combined with massage. For “on the go” metabolism boosts, carry a tissue cup or inhaler with one of these oils. The aroma will help provide energy during workouts and during times where you feel sluggish.

Appetite suppressant

Dr. Alan R. Hirsch, M.D., F.A.C.P., in Scentsational Weight Loss has documented the following research with clinical trials using double blind sample groups. His research shows that by deeply inhaling the odors of food just prior to eating reduces the amount we eat. Dr. Hirsch suggests that various food odors be inhaled three times in each nostril a short time before eating for this benefit. He later explains that just deeply inhaling the plate of food before starting to eat and eating slowly can provide some of these same benefits. His work reinforces the strong connection between aroma and our physical bodies and how aromatics can be used for healthful benefits.

Using an inhaler or tissue cup, inhale Grapefruit, Peppermint or another favorite oil. Inhale deeply 3 times in each nostril before each meal, or when you feel hungry. Use a different oil each day. Follow this routine by inhaling deeply also from your plate before eating. After 7-14 days of using this routine, you will notice a decreased appetite.

There have been further studies showing that cravings can also be curbed by ingesting Peppermint or Grapefruit oils. One half hour prior to meals add 1-2 drops of these oils to juice. Again use a different oil daily.

Fat burn

A blend of Basil, Lavender, Cypress, and Grapefruit with a carrier oil gives an ointment that is known to reduce or emulsify fat in the body. Full body massage or an aromatic bath can be used.


If fluid retention is part of the problem, then Cypress, Lemon, and Oregano are diuretics. Apply on feet or with a full body massage and diffusion.

Weight loss skin care

As weight is lost, flabby skin and stretch marks will be a concern. A local massage with 2% Lavender in a carrier is effective. Some would also add wheat germ oil to the mixture. 2 part carrier to 1 part wheat germ oil and 2% Lavender.  Also go to Pregnancy for good experiences using oils on stretch marks.

Editor - In April 2010 (...) introduced a blend of oils trademarked Metabolic Blend that includes the oils Grapefruit, Lemon, Peppermint, Ginger, and Cinnamon for weight management.  Later other products were added to build this strong protocol for weight control.

Metabolic Blend - Metabolic Blend is a blend of essential oils to manage appetite.  Just add 8 drops to 16 oz. of water (regular size bottle of water, use glass or stainless steel container).  Sip your flavored water before, between, and after each of your healthy meals throughout the day to help manage hunger, calm your stomach, and lift your mood.

Other hints and helps

Too strong - The (...) Metabolic Blend bottle calls for 4 drops per 8 oz of water.  Some find it adequate and refreshing, others do not enjoy the flavor that much and find 4 drops overwhelming.  Don't worry.  If 1-2 drops tastes better to you, it will still be effective.

An alternative - Some would rather take 4 drops in a shot glass with a couple tablespoons of water three times per day about 1/2 hour before meal times, and find it very effective. Others enjoy it better with juice.  Especially fruit juices. Others will put only 1-2 drops with a quart of water to dilute the flavor more, then have 3-4 quarts per day. The key is to be consistent.  People who have been able implement Metabolic Blend into their daily intake, have felt its power and effectiveness.

Hydration - The Metabolic Blend also makes a delicious and healthy flavored water for proper hydration during exercise or other activity. It has zero calories and is an excellent replacement for high-calorie beverages or for drinks that contain artificial sweeteners and colors.

Experiences and Testimonials of others

Chelsea - Hey I have a silly question. I am wondering if Metabolic Blend would be effective-more or less-if applied on location...for example, on my belly and thighs?

Maree - I am down 3 inches because of the Grapefruit and the Metabolic Blend on my thighs, hips & legs!  It works... the Metabolic Blend is a little spicy on my skin so I put the Grapefruit first and then some carrier oil and then the Metabolic Blend:  It works!

Penny - How long did it take you to lose the 3 inches? Do you also take it internally?

Faye - Have you lost any weight?  Any more details on how you use them?

Maree - Yes - I am down 18 pounds, a success for me.  I have not been able to lose for years.  I am putting the essential oils on my upper legs, thighs, stomach and butt and then the Metabolic Blend on top of that.   I am taking it internally 5-6 x a day, just shooting 3-4 drops of Metabolic Blend down my throat and washing it with water and then Grapefruit in my water as well.

Ramona - I am 90 pounds overweight with quite a few health issues due to candida and stuff.  I have sore joints, low energy, stomach issues, etc.  I just finished my first cleanse and followed with probiotics. I have been using the Metabolic Blend every day and Lemon water.  I just bought the shakes and plan to do them twice a day.  I also bought the terrazyme and have the Detoxifying Blend.  I guess I'm excited, but feeling a little overwhelmed with all of these new products and how to best use them.  More than losing all this weight, I just want to feel good and healthy.  I have already changed my diet to all whole foods in their natural form.  I am not eating anything processed and only stevia for sweetener.  I am also  exercising about 4-5 days a week.  I lost 12 pounds last month, with just these changes and the Metabolic Blend , but I have stalled and want to see how these new products can help.

Brooke - Good for YOU!  It sounds like you have the first step down and that is making the choice to do this in the first place!  I will share with you that my neighbor has been in a similar situation.  She has lost over 35 pounds in the last year - with close to 20 of that being with Metabolic Blend. The problem was that she felt like she had 'plateaued' and wasn't able to break past that barrier.  I introduced her to the full weight loss plan when it came out, and within one week she had lost 6 pounds!  She was SO excited because she finally broke through that barrier!  She left for a cruise that next week and was very concerned that she would gain it all back!  Of course she was careful with her eating - but also took along the products.  She called me today to say she only gained 1.5 pounds during the whole cruise!  Not bad - considering there is SO much yummy food on a cruise ship!  Keep it up - follow the plan - and it will work!

Jan -  I lost 10 lbs just using the Metabolic Blend back in April, hadn't gained anything back...yay, and also dropped 3 dress sizes.  I have lost another 5 lbs by just increasing my Metabolic Blend intake to 25 drops a day. And I did that in one week. But also taking the supplements which I've been taking since they came out.  The great news is I haven't gained anything back since April, and was really concerned I would gain from Thanksgiving and Christmas...but nope. Pat - Here is a protocol for your weight loss program:

  Before Breakfast: 5 drops Metabolic Blend with one drop Detoxifying Blend

  Morning Meal: Trim Shake, LLV Supplements, (1) Terrazyme, (1) Detoxifying Blend, (1) GI Cleansing Formula

I have heard that there is an oil that may help with weight loss, is this true?

Yes, in fact there are several oils that can assist a person in losing weight.  Jon, obesity has become the most common metabolic disorder in the world and is a 5 billion dollar business.    There are 2 primary factors why obesity is one of the biggest issues that we deal with, especially in a metabolic sense, one is the amount of calories we consume and the type of calories we consume.  We have all heard of calories in and calories out and if we do not use the calories we consume our bodies store them as fat.  Everyone knows that one of the best ways to reduce body fat is to reduce caloric intake.  The second factor is our life styles.  So many of us have become sedentary, too many hours sitting in front of computers and our children spend too many hours in front of the TV and playing video games.   I do not want to get too scientific on you but I want to give you some information to help you understand how the body works and how essential oils can help us to not only lose weight, but to do it in a healthy manner.

Adipogenesis is the formation of adipocytes or fat cells from stem cells specifically.  Fat cells can increase and decrease in size, when they decrease this is known as lipolysis.  Lipolysis is the process through which adipocytes release fatty content, fat cells decreases in size.  Oils can reserve or stop adipogenesis.  It is stimulated by some type of metabolic action or activity, sometimes that is a chemical response in the body, exercise represents the good way of how we stimulate lipolysis in the body.  The bottom line is that the more fat cells we have and the larger they are, the larger we are.   I am so excited to tell you about a blend that (...) has called Metabolic Blend. This blend is used to reduce the formation of fat cells (remember adipogenesis) while encouraging the release of fatty content, our fat cells decreasing in size (lipolysis), thus reducing their size and we have weight loss.

You mentioned that Metabolic Blend is a blend of oils.  So often I see people with Lemon in their water and have heard that it is good for weight loss.   Does this blend have Lemon oil?

It does have Lemon and also Grapefruit.  Grapefruit and Lemon collectively both help you to reduce your appetite.  Why they do that is actually a very interesting process, one of the things that we know about Grapefruit (and that we know about all citrus oils) is that they have high amounts of limonene.  Limonene has many health benefits.  Remember earlier,  I told you how your body produces fat through adipogenesis, this is where we take a stem cell through a process called Protein Farnesylation.  Again, I am going to get scientific on you - we have different proteins that attach to one another and through a conversion process in conjunction with some enzymes to form an adipocyte, another words, we take one cell and form it to another cell. 

One of the ways that we can reduce fat is if we could interfere with that protein segment and one of the things that we have learned about limonene is that limonene interferes with that protein segment, or the conversion of that stem cell to adipocyte.  Your body simply does not produce as many fat cells. Limonene is also known as being an inhibitor of tumors.  Limonene inhibits tumors the exact same way we are talking about limonene inhibiting adipocyte.  There are a couple of other things with citrus oils:  They not only reduce adipogenesis which prevents your body from producing fat cells,- but limonene also causes lipolysis in your cells.  So not only do you not produce as many fat cells,  but the fat cells that you do have can decrease in size by (releasing fat from those cells).  A dual action is associated with the Grapefruit and Lemon.   Jon, you mentioned that you see people with Lemon in their water often and I do also.  Many people know that Lemon is a diuretic.   Citrus helps the body get rid of toxins.  The body isolates toxicity in fatty tissue, so when we use the citrus essential oils we are cleansing our body of toxins and releasing fat from the cells.

What are the other oils?

Well, Cinnamon bark is also in the blend and it is amazing.  We can decrease the amount of liver damage that we have by using Cinnamon on a regular basis.  Over time and our liver becomes damaged,  overactive and with an Joyful Blend (Elevating Blend) of liver enzymes.   Cinnamon is a tremendous antioxidant and it is also very supportive of those kinds of tissues.  We are all familiar with high and low cholesterol, we define that by two different types of cholesterol, LDL -low density and easy way to remember that is to make it lowsy.  Then we have high density HDL , the good cholesterol– the happy cholesterol.  When we have high levels of LDL (and this is one of the things that we have associated with increased weight gain or obesity) we have high levels of this unhealthy type of fatty tissue that we have in our blood,  serum lipid levels.  One of the things that Cinnamon bark does is brings those lipid levels into balance, you can lower the amount of ldl that you have while at the same time you can increase the levels of the good cholesterol in your body.   We reduce the risk overall of cardio vascular disease if it is associated with obesity. 

The other risk factor associated with obesity is diabetes and diabetes is an issue when we have increased levels of sugar in our bodies.  When we lose that ability to process sugar appropriately we have diabetic outcomes associated with that.  One of the things that we have associated with the Cinnamon is that we can improve the ability of our body to reduce our insulin resistance, we can metabolize our sugars more appropriately.   Cinnamon is one of the most used oils for reducing diabetes, another reason why we use Cinnamon is Adipogenic  inhibition.  We have Cinnamon bark in Metabolic Blend because of adipogenesis, it prevents adipogenesis, it stops your body from producing new fat cells.  This is one of the primary reasons why we say Cinnamon is a metabolic blend to help reduce weight.

Another great addition is Ginger.  Ginger stimulates weight loss through lipolysis.  There was a study done recently that was talking about Ginger essential oil and it stated that Ginger had a significant impact on weight loss.  It stimulates the weight loss through a very interesting process,  through lipolysis.  Essentially your body produces more  epinephrine in the presence of Ginger through enzymatic action.  It causes the adipocytes to release fat, some of the technology that we are talking about might be complicated, but the simplicity of it is when you take Ginger oil and use it consistently your cells have the tendency to release the fat that they are holding.

Peppermint is in the blend and is one of the most used oils.  Peppermint will curb the appetite and reduce cravings.  There was a study that was done not too long ago at  Wheeling Jesuit University, it’s in West Virginia, the Dr. who did this study, his name is Dr. Roudenbush, made one observation- that when the people in the study used Peppermint with consistency on a daily basis, on average they consumed 2,800 fewer calories per week then those who were not using the Peppermint.   Another interesting detail he discovered is that those on a restricted caloric intake of 1,800 calories or less (for 7 days they did this study) that for those who were even on a restricted caloric diet they consumed an average of 23% fewer calories specifically from fat and sugar. Essentially he is saying it reduces cravings and controls appetite. 

Something else is also significant of Peppermint, Peppermint increases the sense of fullness and satisfaction after eating.  It creates satiety or balances the body from a nutritional standpoint, we simply do not have the desire to eat what we normally would.  The other finding that was interesting in this study (and there are actually several studies that promote this particular aspect of it) is that Peppermint actually enhances the flavor and the taste of the food that you are consuming.  There are several people who take the Metabolic Blend at every meal,  improving the taste and the experience of the food.  This is also another way that neurologically, and when we think of it cognitively, we reduce our desire to eat as much.   It is really fascinating of how these work, that Peppermint is doing its work through the central nervous system to accomplish an aspect of weight loss.

Other than weight loss are there any other benefits of using the oils you have talked about?

There are many people who use the blend daily and another reason to do so is to improve glucose utilization.  The oils are going to reduce oxidation and inflammation associated with the tissue.  Obesity, weight gain is an inflammatory response in the body and it is important that we reduce some of those side effects with Peppermint, Cinnamon and citrus oils.  Metabolic Blend is going to help improve your digestion, both Ginger and Peppermint have very strong attributes that way and one of the ways to improve the way your body metabolizes your calories and digests your food.  There is a lot of research about Ginger and Peppermint accomplishing that very thing.  We discussed reducing cholesterol related to obesity and weight gain.  An Increase energy is very important when you are trying to lose weight and citrus and Peppermint help with energy.  Weight gain is not only about calories, not only what we do in the form of exercise but it is also how your body is metabolically functioning.   Metabolically the oils stimulate all of those processes we talked about.  This blend has become one of our most popular products.

Do you know of people who have lost weight using the oils?

There have been several emails and calls from people who have had great success using Metabolic Blend.  There is a gal who came to a plateau with her weight loss.  She started on the blend  Metabolic Blend and it got her weight loss going again and she has lost a significant amount of weight.  Justin, whom is well known in the oil industry, lost 7 pounds in 10 days.  1 pound every 3 days has been a very common storey.    Jan Martinez has gone down 2 dress sizes in the last month.  A lot of weight gain is a water gain, these oils are very good diuretics.  Jan Meredith had a very noticeable difference using blend.  She has had better digestion and elimination and fewer sugar cravings throughout the day.  Who doesn’t need fewer sugar and carbohydrate cravings.  Greg Cook actually started using the blend before it came out and he had dropped 10 lbs in 2 weeks, some days 1-2 lbs a day.  He says that it seems like his metabolism has sped up and he notices a curbing of his appetite.  He has increased energy and feels like he is  functioning better.  Time and time again it is told that people have less carbohydrate cravings and for those of us who love bread, we can use the help!

How should you take the oils and how much?

There really is no wrong or set way to use them.  I have heard several recommendations that I agree with.

·  3-5 drops in water, 3-5 x a day.

·  3-5 drops on the tongue, 3-5 x a day.

·  6-10 drops in a capsule, 3 x a day.

There are several people who drink it in their water every day, anytime they are drinking water.  Breathing it in is good as well, but you increase the effects by taking them internally. 
This is food, this is nutrition for your body.

I have heard that Grapefruit is not good when you are on high blood pressure medication.  Is this blend okay to take?

Jon, I have heard the very same question.   Grapefruit as a food is very different chemically from Grapefruit oil.  The oil comes from the peal, not the pulp or the meat.  The peel is cold pressed and when we look at the makeup of these, they are different.  The Doctor that we have on staff has no concerns, but if you do, please visit with your Doctor.  I personally like to add the (...) oils to my glasses of water that I drink throughout the day.  I enjoy the refreshing taste and it is something that is so easy to do, it has so many benefits.  The Metabolic Blend, don’t you love the name, also reminds me to make healthier choices.  For me, it does help to curb my appetite and I welcome a boost to my metabolism.

Sunny - I have been drinking water with Metabolic Blend consistently and just doing that I have lost 10 pounds in 3 or 4 weeks!!  I found that 8 drops to 16 ounces of water is too strong for me, I just use 3 or 4 drops.

Julia – I heard there is a blend of oils that people are using for weight loss...I want to share that info...does anyone know what that is?

Lil - The list of oils is below with two or three drops of each every morning: Grapefruit, Lemon, Peppermint, and Ginger.

The Sassy Oil Water Recipe

Ginger essential oil (2-3 drops)

Peppermint essential oil (2-3 drops)

Lemon essential oil (2-3 drops)

Add (...) essential oils to 2 quarts of water and drink as part of your weight management plan.  I use virgin coconut oil too.  Curbs the hunger, raises the metabolism.

Samara - Just to let you know, my husband and I have both lost noticeable weight and the only thing we've done differently is take (...) Basic Vitality Supplements (LLV) supplements. We just have been taking the supplements for a month now and lost weight without trying. That's never happened to me before! Pretty cool!

OH, I have put Grapefruit oil in my water every now and again, so maybe that helps too!

Monica - Dr. Hill's Weight Loss Blend is:

1 drop of Cinnamon

2 drops of Ginger

2 drops of Grapefruit

2 drops of Lemon
