Tourette’s syndrome is a neurological disorder that
starts in childhood and is characterized with the child
making uncontrolled repetitive movements or sounds that are
referred to as tics. These tics may include actions such as
jerking the arm, shrugging shoulders, jumping, kicking,
blinking eyes, clearing throat, coughing or blurting out
These tics usually begin at about age 7 (anywhere from 2
to 12) and are more common in boys than girls. Heightened
emotions, excitement or anxiety, can increase tics as
opposed to a calm emotional state where the tics subside.
Tics are usually diminished during rest and sleep. It is
also reported that some with Tourette’s Syndrome may
experience other neurological problems such as ADHD, OCD,
depression or anxiety disorders. Many experience the
symptoms being reduced in their late teenage and early adult
years and with the exception of the discouragement that
comes from being noticed there are no know detrimental
effects to health or longevity from the disorder.
The reason for Tourette’s Syndrome is not yet known. It
is a neurological disorder that is believed to be associated
with the basal ganglia, frontal lobes or cortex regions of
the brain and the neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin,
and norepinephrine) that facilitate communication between

I have Tourette's Syndrome coupled with ADD. I
have been using Serenity, Frankincense, and
Citrus Bliss. I have noticed that the
combination helps me stay calm and
concentrate so I can get my work done during
the day. I use it aromatically (using direct
inhalation) and topically on the back of my
neck and feet. At night I only use the
Serenity and Frankincense to help calm my
brain so I can sleep. At night I also use
the two oils aromatically (using direct

On a side note my family (on both sides) has
a history of Tourette's and ADD/ADHD. We
have noticed over the years in the tics that
they are slowly going away. On my Mom’s side
of the family: my Great Grandfather had some
mild verbal tics, my Grandma has physical
tics, my Mom is a carrier so she doesn’t
have tics, and I have mild physical tics.
Melanie - Would
someone please post the peaceful child blend recipe and how
you used it, success stories etc. I have been searching for
it on the website and I can't seem to locate it. Thanks so
Editor’s note: The following is one
version of the Peaceful Child Blend. Please see near the end
of this post comments from Deborah on the original blend
that includes Lavender as the second ingredient and how she
used it with Tourette’s.
Monica - Here is the blend recipe: 85 d
Vetiver (1/3 bottle), 30 d Ylang Ylang, 20 d Frankincense,
15-17 d Clary Sage, 10 d Marjoram, 35 d FC0 (optional)
Rochelle - I work with a therapist who
diffuses the Peaceful Child blend in her office. The
difference in her sessions - especially with add/adhd
clients - has been significant. I now keep an inventory in
her office, which includes the blend, diffusers, roll-ons
and terracotta pendants (great for elementary age children).
People are so drawn to this blend - it is amazing. I have
another acquaintance who I've helped her make a 'perfume'
with the blend. She had a small perfume atomizer and uses
1/4 tsp Epsom salt, Peaceful Child blend to the strength she
likes and fills with purified water. She loves it!
Personally, I put it on the bottom of my foot in the morning
and over my heart in the evening.
Anne - I've been trying to find a quiet
moment when I can make a roller ball of the peaceful child
blend for my daughter 7years old ... in the mean time she
loves the white fir and wears it in a necklace diffuser with
great calming results. And then the doTerra ornament we've
pinned to her pillow and use Serenity (which has many of the
Peaceful child blend in it already) overnight... she is
calmer, though not necessarily sleeping more... but happier
to just play until tired rather than come out and wake me a
Jeannie - I used Peaceful Child blend on
an 8 year old with severe ADHD and it did not work.

Deborah - Hi Melanie, I created the
Peaceful Child blend for my son who has Tourette’s Syndrome,
ADHD, anxiety, sleeping disorders, and Oppositional Defiance
Disorder. For children with sever ADHD, the blend will truly
help, but you will have to do a few other things in
First off, make sure to use the blend consistently--at
least twice a day (AM/PM) over the heart, on the bottoms of
feet, and at night under the nose (if the child doesn't mind
the scent). Secondly, cut consumption of refined sugars, or
at least reduce it, by 1/2 (especially high fructose corn
syrup). Eliminate any treats or foods containing red dyes
and MSG. Thirdly, try adding an essential fatty acid
supplement (Omega 3s or EXOmega) plus 50 mg. of magnesium
glycinate to the child's diet. You can buy the magnesium in
a liquid form or in capsules.
It should be noted that lavender is missing in all these
Peaceful Child recipes online. It is the 2nd ingredient and
plays a major role in the calming properties. I don't
actually give out the correct recipe, but you can order it
at my web site. Lastly, if all else fails, I highly
recommend getting your child on a super absorbable
micronutrient brain supplement called "EMPower Plus"
(powdered drink or capsules). My son has to take this in
addition to Peaceful Child. It is very expensive, but works!
I hope this information has been helpful. Kindest regards,
Deborah D. Gardner
Skipper - My good
friends 13 year old son has developed ticks and posturing
and the medication he is on is not helping much. Being at
such a tender age, other kids tend to make fun and it is
really affecting him emotionally it is also starting to get
in the way of his normal daily function. His mother
desperately wants help!
Kathy - I think many people believe that
vaccines, which contain aluminum, msg, neuro-toxins, and
cyto-toxic ingredients could be the cause of neurological
diseases like Tourettes. Children receive up to 70 or more
different types of vaccines by the time they reach school
age, and I would look for and follow any protocol possible
to remove these toxic agents.
My experience is that using the oils in every way and
often will begin to soften the horrible restless effects of
diseases like Tourette's. If it were me, I would institute
the intake of natural chelators such as are found in
helichrysum. I would also use oils that are high in
sesquiterpenes like Ginger, Ylang Ylang and Myrrh and oils
that cross the blood barrier like Frankincense, Vetiver and
I would also suggest oils like Balance to and Serenity to
calm and balance the body's entire body's energy system. Use
your intuitions to decide application techniques. But
definitely consider a spinal technique, topically to the
head and neck, and under the tongue with Frankincense.
JJ - Frankincense, helichrysum, myrrh
and Vetiver. I would incorporate these in a spinal
treatment with Balance and Serenity. I would also diffuse
Vetiver and Balance in his room at night. Oils do well with
neurological issues, it just takes patience and consistency.
Rob - I would put Frankincense under the
tongue. Apply Frankincense and Helichrysum on the spine and
brain stem. Use Balance and Serenity for calming the body.
Editorial note: I shortened Kendra’s
comments below to be consistent with the flow of the
website. Hopefully I caught the intensity and sincerity she
has on this problem.
Kendra -There is totally no "oil"
information in this post. I apologize, but I'm going to
send it… I think that medication can be wonderful, (and I
know that there are a lot of people out there that totally
disagree with me and I respect that). But when you are
living with a spouse or a child that suffers from some kind
of so called "disorder" where the brains electrical system
might not be functioning at a high enough frequency, it can
be really tough. Day in and day out.
In no way am I saying that medication is an answer to
your problems, but until you can find something or someone
that can help you, sometimes you need to go that route, for
a while. … I work with a child psychiatrist that is
extremely intelligent when it comes to medicating children.
He is wonderful! (But) I will give you a quick example of
how I have seen "other" doctors prescribe medication:
Usually if a child is ADD/ADHD they prescribe a
stimulant, for example Adderall, which ups your dopamine, so
the kid takes that in the morning, so he can concentrate in
school, then at night before he goes to bed, the dr. might
prescribe something to help the child's brain slow down, so
he can sleep, to lower his dopamine. So it's a vicious
cycle. How would you like that to be going on in your head?
… Can you imagine how you would feel. You are
taking upper's and downer's. You would be all over the
You tell that Mom that "she" will get through this pain.
Like I have said before, a parent with a "normal child" will
never, never, never understand the things that you have to
go thru with that child, each and every day. (or the joy
that you also receive from that child!). You
have her hug that kid so tight, don't let him go and tell
him how very precious he is! I'm sure if you ask
her, she will tell you how intelligent he is, way above the
other kids, and how intuitive, also! They will
both get thru this, in the next couple of years,
She has the oils and that will also open a whole new
avenue to other things to do for that 13 yr old young man!
By the way, I was reading all the of the posts and what they
were suggesting to use, I don't know if this boy has sensory
issues, but when the Mom applies these oils, tell her to
have her son smell them first (to make sure he accepts
Amanda - Skipper, I saw your post and I
wanted to respond since I have Tourette’s and have been in
your friend’s son’s shoes. I took clonodine for my ADD and
dexodrine for my Tourette’s. I started it when I was
diagnosed at about 8 years old till about 2 and half years
ago at the age 25. The medication helped keep me calm and
focus without making me drowsy, but didn’t really help with
the tics. Honestly, nothing can really help with this
(except surgery). It wasn’t till after I went off the meds
that I realized I had issues with anxiety. For about 10
years now I have done yoga which helped with keeping my mind
calm throughout the day and helps with stress (especially at
night so I can sleep).
A couple of months ago I started with the oils and it has
changed my life. The oils help with the anxiety and
constant thinking so I can get through my day. Each person
is different, but I hope your friend’s son doesn’t give up
hope. He will have a strong future if he’s willing to work
hard and believe in himself. If it wasn’t for having a
tutor, psychologist, my teachers, and supportive parents I
wouldn’t have been able to accomplish as much as I have.
Yes, your friend’s son will have a lot of hard times, but he
needs to choose whether those rough times are going to make
him stronger or let him fall apart.
About the bullying… since he is most likely going through
puberty, the tics are the worst during this time. The best
thing to do is to educate people at the school. I recommend
the teachers, parent boosters, and/or student leadership
team to create an ability awareness day/week. This will
teach about people’s various abilities and how it’s okay to
be different. They can have speakers come that have
over-come adversity, centers on what it’s like to have
various disabilities (physical impairments, blindness,
deafness, autism, Tourettes, etc.). I have noticed a huge
difference in the schools that have done this. Students and
staff are more accepting, tolerant, and less ignorant of
peoples’ differences at the schools that educate people on
others’ differences vs. those who do not.
I hope this information helps and that you pass along
this information to your friend and her son. He should know
he’s not alone with this condition. He will have to work
harder than most, but he will come out that much wiser and
stronger from it. When he gets older I hope he realizes what
a blessing it is to have an extra challenge in his life. It
makes you a better person in the end.
