Health Issue                 return to A to Z

Parts of this were taken with permission from Essential Oils Overview and Reference Guide, published by: The Family Tree, 2008

Polyps are a growth of tissue that protrudes from a mucous membrane in the body. The more common locations are the nasal passages, the colon, the cervix and the urinary bladder. The growth may be attached directly to the mucous tissue or have a long connecting “stock”. Although some may be pre-cancerous or cancerous in most cases they are benign and not a serious health concern. They can cause related difficulties such as breathing problems with nasal polyps or unusual bleeding with cervical polyps.

Nasal polyps may be the most common and form in the nasal passages or sinus cavities. Those with asthma or allergies seem more likely to experience these. They vary in size and can cause difficulties in breathing or infections in the sinuses as they become large enough to block passages. They are very rarely malignant. Cervical polyps often times can go undetected. They seem to be more prevalent in those that have had several pregnancies. If there are symptoms they can include unusual bleeding or an unusual mucous like discharge if they become infected. Colon polyps, like others, may go undetected and in some instances they may become malignant although in most cases they are not a serious health concern.

Experiences and Testimonials of others

Shawn - Is there anyone who has a protocol for Nasal Polyps, I know the oils of choice are Frankincense, Oregano, Respiratory Blend, Peppermint, Cleansing Blend and Basil. I would like to find some one who may have had a way of using these oils to get rid of or heal polyps.

Stacielynn - I use Frankincense mostly for inflammation in my lungs (Cystic Fibrosis).  I had my nasal polyps removed about 12 years ago and they grew back.  About 6 months ago I was at the doctor and she was asking me how I was able to breathe through my nose because the polyps (that had obviously grown back over the years) were so B-I-G!  Well, later after I had been taking the Frankincense for about a month for cystic fibrosis, I was reading in the Modern Essentials book that Frankicense is good for polyps...so I marched into the bathroom...with my flashlight....and looked in my nose!  And guess what??  No polyps!  I'm not sure how long it took for them to go away, because I didn't check for about 5 weeks...they might have been gone in a few days but I don't know for sure.  So this last visit to the doctor she looked up my nose...and went back and read my chart because she 'thought' I had a history of nasal polyps....how cool is that for a 'side effect?'  I put a few drops under my tongue a few times a day.

Julie Ann - I have a friend who has excessive nose bleeds constantly.  I had him putting Geranium up his nose to stop the bleeding and talked him into going to a doctor to see what was causing it.   The CAT scan showed a cyst/polyp which is his reason for the bleeding.   Have any of you run into this?   What would you do if it was you?   Do you know of anything used in the nose that will shrink a polyp/cyst?

Rob – To stop the bleeding place 3-4 drops of Helichrysum on a cotton pad and hold it over the nose, while applying pressure to the veins on either side of the bridge of the nose.  After it slows down, you can put tissues with a drop or two of helichrysum up into the nostril. Very effective. If you don't have helichrysum, use cypress or lavender. To shrink the cyst, I would apply frankincense to it several times daily and at night.

Carly - My brother has nasal cysts so badly that he can hardly breathe, let alone smell, taste or speak so you can understand him. I am trying to help him avoid surgery. I read that Frankincense is the oil, but not how to use it.   Would he just stick a drop on them several times a day?   Hopefully he can reach them all.

Stacielynn - I got rid of mine with Frankincense. Had the surgery in 2000 and they grew back over the last 12 years.  Frankincense made them disappear and my doctor had to do a double take and look at my chart because she thought I had them.  I put a few drops under my tongue twice a day.

Pete – I had a friend who used Grounding Blend to get rid of her nasal polyps. Applied directly using q-tips I believe.

Debbie - I had an acquaintance that came in and said , I'll tell you a little secret. She had an operation to have 5 polyps removed from only on one side of the nose. Then she was told about using Melaleuca, she started applying it around the nose and a little in the nose. One night about 2 weeks later she coughed and had something stuck in her throat , spat it out and it was a polyp.

She kept on applying the Melaleuca and had another 7, yes 7, come out of her nose. This lady has not had to go back for any more operations and continues to take the Melaleuca.

Sunny - For several months now, a friend of mine has taken Respiratory Blend daily for his COPD....  Along with the COPD, he has had a polyp at the bottom of his lung for two years.  Doctors have monitored the polyp routinely. At the last checkup, they found that it is shrinking.  My friend asked if Respiratory Blend has any properties that could be attributable to this surprising new development.  Individually, the essential oils in Respiratory Blend don't have anti-tumorial properties (I don't think?). Could it be that taken together, their synergy is working in wonderful ways?

Sunny - I have a friend who has polyps in her nose.  She can't smell a thing and would like to have them dissolved.  Any suggestions?

BK - I think John or Rob wrote that the protocol they used was frankincense, and If I ever think of polyps in the nasal, colon or uterus I think frankincense!! Apply neat, drink it, smell it.

Jan - I would agree with the last post and suggest the sinus irrigation protocol. I had a friend that also put 2 drops each of lavender, lemon and peppermint, then dipped the end of a cotton swab to the mixture and applied to the polyps.  Do this till they are more than gone.  She would sometimes also apply frankincense.
