Hearing Loss

Parts of this were taken with permission from Essential Oils Overview and Reference Guide, published by: The Family Tree, 2008

Summary

Earsee also Meniere’s disease, Tinnitus, Vertigo

Hearing loss is simply not being able to hear normal levels of sound in one or both ears. It is common with aging occurring in 50 % of those over 75 and 33% of those between 65 and 75. Symptoms can include:

Not hearing the higher frequencies in sound such as being able to hear male voices easier than female or missing the s or th sounds in conversation.

Having trouble understanding when there is considerable background noise

Hearing but not understanding certain words

There are a number of common causes for loss of hearing.

Conductive hearing loss (CHL) occurs when there are problems with the ear drum or the tiny bones that conduct sound in the ear. These can be damaged or interfered with by wax buildup, fluids that remain during and after an infection or injury from something inserted into the ear.

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) as the nerve endings in the ear that sense sound are not responding correctly. Age-related hearing loss is usually attributed to this. It can also be the result of some diseases (Meniere’s, mumps, measles), exposure to loud noises and a side effect of some medicines.

Congenital hearing loss are problems present at birth and can be genetic or due to certain infections during pregnancy.

Injury can be the cause such as extreme pressure differences during diving, a direct blow or trauma to the ear or other injuries.

Suggested protocols:

Editor’s note: This is Dr. Lawton’s protocol and is demonstrated by her on You Tube and worth watching. It addresses a number of types of hearing loss and also wax build up. Here is an abbreviated version:

Application technique: With each application apply the oils by dripping them into the palm of the receiving person and the applying person dipping their fingers in the oil and with a rubbing/massaging motion start at the front of the ear, then over the fleshy rim of the ear and down to the ear lobe multiple times. Then follow down the Eustachian tubes, starting at the depression below and behind the ears and down behind the jaw line.

4 drops each Balance and Serenity and repeat the application technique above 10 times.

4 drops Helichrysum and repeat the application technique above 5 times.

2 drops each Lavender and White Fir and repeat the application technique 5 times.

3 drops Geranium and repeat the application technique 3 times.

Deeply inhale the mixture of oils that has accumulated in the palm of the hand.

Gently pull and stretch the ear and surrounding area to stimulate the circulation and absorption of the oils that have been applied.

Repeat this 2 - 3 times per week for 6 – 8 weeks.

Caution: Do not put oils directly into the ear.

Experiences and Testimonials of others

John  - We had a neighbor lady that has had a hearing loss problem that has gotten worse each year.  She was about ready do get a hearing aid, when we suggested that she try Helichrysum. We had heard that in certain types of hearing loss, helichrysum was effective. Per our suggestion, she would apply helichrysum twice daily, sometimes more- on, around and behind the ear.  She would also apply to reflex points on the foot... the big toes, and 4th and 5th toes.  Sometimes she would put a drop of Deep Blue and helichrysum on a 1/2 cotton ball and leave it in her ear overnight. I hadn't talked to her, in fact I kindof forgot about her for the last month or so, till she showed up at our door wanting more oils.  She said her hearing is about 75% better!

Whitney - My 2 year old has a type of progressive hearing loss (LVA). I'm going to start using Helichrysum, and I've already been using Frankincense around her ears. Any other suggestions, or things you've tried for hearing loss? I'd love to hear!

Pat - You are using the oils I would have recommended. You might want to use Basil and On Guard on the bottom of her feet.

Vona - What would you do to help recover hearing from a hearing loss that occurred in connection with surgery that was done to remove a tumor from the ear area?

Leah - I would try helichrysum first. It can help repair nerve damage. I've noticed my own hearing sharpening a little with faithful application.

Joanna - I have a friend who asked me today what would be the best oil be to improve her hearing. Some time ago she had an ear infection. She got meds for it but they never helped. Soon after she found out her hearing ability was declining. She can still hear but if someone does not speak clearly or is soft spoken she may have a hard time. I was thinking Frankincense topically behind ears? Please let me know what you would recommend. Thank you

Nicole - My mother-in-law had an ear infection that wouldn't clear up after multiple rounds of antibiotics.  We used eucalyptus behind the ear and it started draining within 15 minutes and her hearing started improving.  So the eucalyptus would help if there is fluid that won't drain.  I think that the frankincense would help regenerate the cells as well.

Lorie - Helichrysum is supposed to be great for hearing loss.  Rub all around the inner and outer ear 3x a day.

Brenda - I know a gentleman that has pretty severe wax buildup.  He has had that his whole life he said.  Is there something that works with wax buildup?  And, how soon should it work? Thanks,

Becky - I had the privilege of seeing Dr. Sue Lawton explain her hearing protocol recently--so cool!  It uses Balance, Serenity, Helichrysum., White Fir, Lavender and Geranium, and possibly Purify.
