Colds

Parts of this were taken with permission from Essential Oils Overview and Reference Guide, published by: The Family Tree, 2008

Summary

see also Bronchitis, Cough and Congestion, Flu, Pneumonia, Sore or Strep Throat

The common cold is not as simple as the name implies since there are hundreds of different types of viruses that can cause this infection.  Each one may have slightly different symptoms.   The various forms of flu, like a cold, are also viral infections of the upper respiratory tract but have more severe symptoms.  The symptoms commonly associated with a cold can include:  cough, mild fever, runny nose, sore throat, or stuffy nose.  Some cold symptoms may be confused with allergies but allergies usually do not include a fever and will typically last for a longer period of time.

Oils, blends & products recommended:

Oils & Blends: Respiratory BlendC, EucalyptusEC, FrankincenseC, LavenderC, LemonEC, Lime, MelaleucaC, Protective BlendC, OreganoC, PeppermintEC, PurifyC

Essential oils based products:

Also consider: Massage Blend, Grounding Blend, BasilE, Cassia, CinnamonEC, CypressC, Digestive Blend, MarjoramEC, RosemaryEC, ThymeEC

Note: to understand the E and C superscript go to Home and scroll to New Helps.

Suggested protocols:

Antiviral: Frankincense, Melaleuca, Oregano, Protective Blend (or numerous other oils, remember the virus can be any one of hundreds) are antiviral.

2 to 4 drops applied topically to the bottoms of the feet, chest, or throat or internally by gargling or in a capsule. (Remember oils taken internally have to pass thru the intestinal walls and the liver before getting into the blood stream whereas topically applied oils are delivered into the bloodstream within seconds.)  For internal use with children consider a spoonful of honey with one or two drops of the chosen oil. Begin using oils at the first signs for the most successful outcome.

[Note: Oregano (also Cinnamon and Thyme) is a "hot" oil meaning it can cause skin or other irritations with those that may be sensitive. Use fewer drops and/or dilute with a carrier oil or consider alternatives if you suspect sensitivity.]

Fever: Eucalyptus, Peppermint topically applied to forehead, chest, or feet.

Nasal congestion: Respiratory Blend, Lavender, Peppermint inhaled via a diffuser or the simple cup and inhale technique.

Cough and chest congestion: Cypress, Eucalyptus, Lime, Melaleuca, or Peppermint applied topical to the chest or with a lymph massage.

The following, more detailed protocols, originated from presentations by Dr. David Hill

Prevention:

1.      Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough sneeze or wipe your nose.  Tissues should be discarded immediately in a wastebasket.

2.      Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Discard the tissue immediately in a waste basket.

3.      Run your diffuser often in your home.  I know there has been much discussion on our diffuser lately, and we will address that in a blog soon to come.  Dr. Hill and other leaders have much to say about that.  What oils?  Protective Blend for sure.  It was developed to boost our immune systems, and guard us against pathogens.  I hear it humming away right now as I write.

4.      While we are talking Protective Blend, I would also consider rubbing your own children’s feet with Protective Blend every night before bed time and every morning before they put there shoes on for the day.  Not only is it a bonding experience for you and your children, but it will bolster there immune systems.

5.      I would also mist your family’s bed sheets with a mist of essential oils before bedtime.  10 drops of Protective Blend or some other essential oil with a ¼ cup of water in a spray bottle – shake well.

6.      If there is virus in your area, obviously you want to avoid contact with those that are sick.

7.      Put about 1 drop of Lemon oil for every 8oz of water you and your family drink.  Over time this will greatly strengthen the immune system.  In our home, we have not had colds or flu of any significance in over a year since we started incorporating essential oils in our household.  And this is one way we have been consistent with.

8.      As always, as you clean regularly around your home, use essential oils to clean.  Purify, Protective Blend or Lemon in a spray bottle used for cleaning will assure pathogen free surfaces.

9.      Be aware and recognize symptoms if they strike you or a family member.  Immediately begin an essential oil protocol and see a professional if you experience symptoms. Swine flu symptoms are similar to regular flu: Fever, body aches, sore throat, cough, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy.

10.     Make your home a happy place, free from stress.  A haven with kind words and positive thoughts.  Make a place of safety and refuge.  As storms rage on, have your home be a house of prayer, gratitude and love. These are all things we can do that will create of synergy of protection for your home and family.

If you have symptoms:
We’ve talked about it before.  Nip it in the bud…Jump on the Genesis train…Strike early and often…no matter what the idiom, the advise is still the same.  At the first indication of a symptom, strike back quick and hard.

1.      Make 00 size capsules of 8 drops Oregano, 5 drops Protective Blend and 3 drops Frankincense.  Then take the capsules internally twice daily.

[Note: Oregano (also Cinnamon and Thyme) is a "hot" oil meaning it can cause skin or other irritations with those that may be sensitive. Use fewer drops and/or dilute with a carrier oil or consider alternatives if you suspect sensitivity.]

2.     Gargle twice daily with 1 drop Oregano, 2 drops Protective Blend, and 2 drops Lemon in 1 or 2 tbsp of pure water.  After gargling for 5-10 minutes, swallow the mixture.

3.    Oil pull daily with 1 tbsp VCO, 2 drops Oregano, and 2 drops Melaleuca.  Pull for about 10 minutes before expectorating the blend. Then brush your teeth and rinse out your mouth.  This mixture may be hot.  If it’s too hot, reduce the Oregano to 1 drop and add a drop of Lemon.  You can also consider Cinnamon, Cassia or Protective Blend instead of Melaleuca.

4.    Always put Lemon and Peppermint in your drinking water and drink it often.  Staying hydrated is an important part of assuring the oils work effectively in our bodies.

5.      Consider other protocols for specific symptoms.  Respiratory Blend to the chest, neck and back for respiratory issues, Digestive Blend (often in a capsule with Frankincense) for nausea or digestive problems.  Oregano or Cinnamon and Lemon as a gargle for sore throats.

6.     Make sure the oils you have are (...) essential oils. Why?  They are guaranteed to be sourced from the area’s in which the are indigenous to.  They are organically grown.  Harvested by correct methods and at the correct time.  Distilled by professionals at the correct temperature and pressure.  Finally each batch is tested by independent labs for correct constituents content to guarantee efficacy.  These methods are key to insuring safety and effectiveness.

7.    Diffuse the air that you are working, living and sleeping in.  If you are suffering from symptoms, consider oils and blends that will help.  If you are trying to quarantine areas of healthy air, diffuse Protective Blend.

8.    Do twice daily spinal treatments named the Massage Blend Technique.

9.      Eat healthy mostly raw foods.

10.     Get exercise and fresh air where possible.

Rob - We have been using essential oils in our home for over 13 years, with good success. However, since having (...) (xxx)™ oils in our home and using them almost daily, (since November of 2007) we have had no…zero…none…zilch…nada colds or flu's in our home.

note: see lots of helps from Rob by going to the "Helpful Article" tab above.

Jan - I woke up in the middle of the night with the beginning of that certain kind of sore throat that signals a cold coming on. I discussed with myself whether to just go back to sleep and deal with it it in the morning or to get out of bed and take some Protective Blend right then. The voice that won the argument was the one that reminded me if I didn't take care of it right then I risked losing one of my best oils stories - that I have had only one 2 1/2 day miniature cold in 14 years.

So I got up, dropped about 6 drops of Protective Blend in my mouth, let is slowly spread over and down my throat and went back to sleep.

I woke up this morning with no trace of cold symptoms!!! Yea! My story is still intact!

Protocols folks recommend for children

Rob - For children that can’t take internal treatments, use appropriate oils on their feet, chest and using the spinal treatment. Oils that are an important part of your germ fighting arsenal and that are good to have around are; Protective Blend, Oregano, Cinnamon, Myrrh, Basil, Clove, Lemon, Peppermint,  and the spinal treatment oils. These essential oils have the ability to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses, get down into the cellular level and make things right. Essential Oils are proven natural combatants to boost the immune system and protect us from and combat against flu strains including the swine flu.

A Change of season - a helpful article from Robert James' blog

Fall brings a new season, including cold and flu season. As an "oiler", here are some things that can protect us from these nagging and sometimes dangerous inFirmities.
Kindly remember that essential oils work best for early intervention, improving our immune response, and infections or acute conditions.  If we can address colds, flu before they happen or "from the onset" or "in the beginning" the chances of reducing the severity of symptoms or decreasing the length of the indicators is increased.

Remember that most colds and flu are upper respiratory infections and are viruses. Science has no cure for virus. If you catch a cold or flu virus, your doctor will say you must "ride it out". Most prescriptions or OTC medications will offer symptom relief, but will not cure. Antibiotics are for bacterial infections. Antibiotics do not work at all in treating the common cold. Antibiotics are medicines that kill bacteria, not viruses. Many antibiotics work by disrupting the bacteria's cell wall. Viruses don't even have a cell wall.

Antibiotics can actually make colds worse. By indiscriminately killing the beneficial bacteria, an environment more hospitable to the cold viruses is created.
Symptom medications can sometimes have worse side effects that the cold or flu itself. Decongestants are dangerous if you have hypertension or heart disease. The FDA has recently released warnings against using decongestants for children. Aspirin and other pain relievers (like acetaminophen or ibuprofen) can be used for fever or aches. But again it is not recommended to give aspirin to children under 18 because of the risk of Reye's syndrome (a condition of that leads to brain and liver damage). The long term effects of taking pain relievers are often ignored, using a "I wont have to worry about that for a long time" attitude. The day will come however.

As oilers, we know that essential oils offer more powerful and effective alternatives to these medications. We know that oils can in fact reduce the length and severity of viruses.

Synergizing preventatives

Lets first review preventative care. Keeping in mind that essential oils, when combined with common sense precautions can create a synergy that can be a powerful preventative or generate curative measures.

Proper rest

One of the most important rules of prevention is getting plenty of proper rest. Sleep disorders, including not getting enough deep sleep (REM) time, Dysomnias, Hypopnea, Parasomnias, and Anxiety are all dangerous disorders that can at the least reduce the effectiveness of the immune system, and cause other far more dangerous and complex problems. This is a topic for another newsletter in more detail, suffice to say that Lavender, Ylang Ylang and the blend Calming Blend™ are oils that can be topically applied or diffused to aid in getting proper rest.

Minimize Stress

Again a topic for another day, however consider that essential oils are well known for improving feelings of well-being and attitude. Joyful Blend (Elevating Blend)™, Grounding Blend™, Lavender and several other essential oils have proven very effective.

Daily Exercise

20 minutes of simple daily exercise can do wonders for your mental wellness, and strengthening your immune system.

Proper diet

Eating diets high in fruits and vegetables, controlling intake of high sugar foods (soda) and processed foods and proper or "healthy" fats can also add to the immune system synergy we are trying to create.

Wash your hands often

Especially during cold and flu season, or if you ever come in contact with someone with a cold or flu, wash your hands. If you don't have a essential oil based cleanser (newsletter 4.8), at least use soap and water.

Use essential oils often

Many essential oils are antiviral. Nearly all will reduce pathogens. During the cold and flu season, make essential oil use common in the home and at the work place. Apply essential oil to the bottom of your feet every morning and night. Consider, Purify™, On-Guard™, or Invigorating Blend™.

Have the diffuser in your home running often, switching between rooms – consider the blends mentioned above as well as singles, Lemon, Wild Orange, Eucalyptus, Grapefruit or Lavender. You can also combine several drops of Invigorating Blend™ in a small spray bottle with distilled water and spray bed linens before bed time, or car interiors, bathrooms or office areas. This will kill airborne virus and strengthen the immune system, and deodorize the area with an unbelievable aroma.

Genesis

At the onset of a cold or flu… that would be from the moment you feel a tickle in your throat, or sinus headache comes on, or you sneeze a suspicious sneeze, or your nose starts to drip.

Internal

Quickly ingest some On-guard™. For the bold, drop a couple drops in your mouth and swallow hard. For the less bold, put two drops in two tablespoons of water or juice and "shoot it". For children you can add the drops to a tablespoon of honey. For those used to taking your medication in a sugary, syrupy, alcohol base, you can add two drops to a sugar cube and eat it (Mary Poppins calls it a spoonful of sugar). Take internally every two hours as symptoms persist.

(Alternative) Also consider one or two drops each of Peppermint, Melaleuca and Lemon.

Topical Chest rub (peppalypress)

Create a chest rub by mixing 2 drops each of Peppermint, Eucalyptus and Cypress. For children add to a teaspoon of carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil). Apply to the chest with a massage and use a lymph node massage. (under the jaw, and along the length of the neck) Apply every two hours; continue for 2 applications even after symptoms subside. Use caution with children. Keep out of eyes. Also apply the mixture to the bottom of the feet.

(Alternative) Respiratory Blend™ or a blend of Lemon, Peppermint and Lavender.

Diffuser

Put the chest rub mixture (peppalypress) or the Respiratory Blend™ in a diffuser and run every other ½ hour till symptoms subside. If symptoms have already come on strong, consider adding several drops of the Respiratory Blend™ or peppalypress to a pot of boiling water, then place your head over the pot with a towel over our head, making a "steam tent". Use caution when around the hot water, especially with children.

For miserable fever, massage several drops of Peppermint oil to the bottom of the feet. You may apply to the forehead as well. (Use a carrier with children, use caution not to get in eyes.)

Being consistent, and getting plenty of rest are the keys. Some pharmaceuticals would have you believe you can work through the misery of a cold or flu with the right "medication". The truth is, it might make work tolerable, but the long term effects could be worse or dangerous. Your body and mind need rest.

Note for infants

Essential oils are great for infants; they are very effective on the bottoms of the feet. If you apply topically to the chest or back, be sure to use a carrier oil, and cover the area with clothing so the infant cannot transfer oils to his/her eyes. Using diffusers in infant's rooms is fine.

On a personal note

We have been using essential oils in our home for over 13 years, with good success. However, since having (...) (xxx)™ oils in our home and using them almost daily, (since November of 2007) we have had no…zero…none…zilch…nada colds or flu's in our home.
